FAQ

No. Older versions of Mixman were created for different versions of Windows. Some go back as far as Windows 3.1, Win95, Win98, and WinXP.

MIXMAN IS NO LONGER SUPPORTING ANY OLDER VERSIONS OF SOFTWARE

Currently, new versions of Mixman App work on Win7

All TRK files and All MIX files from earlier versions of Mixman or earlier products should work fine in the current version of the Mixman App for Win7.

However, you will have to move those files over manually. See the info on where to put TRK and MIX files.

No, currently Mixman supports Mixman TRK, PC WAV files, and you may Load REX files in to Mixman.

MP3s will not load at this time, and it is not recommended that you try to load a full linear file of a song in to Mixman. The results will not be what you expect most likely as Mixman is currently not designed that way.

Mixman songs are interactive versions of songs. Different musical elements have been separated and organized so that you can perform and create your own musical creations.

In Mixman’s Remixing Studio (sometimes called the “Play Screen”), you can trigger sounds, lock sounds, apply FX, use scratching, cross-fader and trigger macros along with other real-time controls. When you Click the Record button in the Play Screen, Mixman is tracking every move you make. It remembers what sounds are loaded, and any changes you make. When you hit Stop and then Play, it will play back your performance exactly as you just Recorded it. This is different than recording a sound.

Just click the Save button to Save your performance. It will default you to the My Mixes folder. We recommend you save it there or make sub-folders to organize your saved performances. When you Save it creates a .Mix file. That is MIxman’s format for saving Songs and Performances. .Mix files remember what sounds are loaded in what location, what the settings are, if there are any Macros stored, and any performance Data.

You MUST have performance data to use the Editing Studio, otherwise there is nothing to edit. Remember, Mixman didn’t record sounds, it recorded your moves and the Editing Studio doesn’t edit sound files it edits your performance data.

You also need a performance to use the Overdub mode in the Recording Studio. Again, if you don’t have a performance, there is nothing to apply an Overdub to. You will see a green bar representing the performance from the Play Screen when you are in the Recording Studio.

You must have a performance to Export or Share to the web.

Once you have a performance, you can Export it to a linear sound/audio file. Go to the Control Room and click on the Export button. Select “to a file...” You have two choices, you can Export to Windows Media which is a compressed format, or you can Export to 44K 16bit stereo Wav file which is suitable to burn an audio CD.

You may also share your file to your Facebook wall.

Mixman does not authorize the use of any copyrighted sounds or music that you do not have the right to use.

Yes, Mixman supports importing of Wav, Rex and TRK files.

If you load (we recommend small/shorter sounds) Wav files in to Mixman, you can use the Mix to TRK Export feature. This is an advanced power move and we recommend you check for a future How To Video that demonstrates how to create a Mix and then Export it to a TRK and then load the TRK back in to Mixman.

The Track Maker Studio in Mixman allows you to load up to 8 source samples and create patterns and sequences that can be saved out as TRK files.

TRK files or “track files” are Mixman’s own format. TRK files are similar to Rex files, and they are like containers or wrappers that can have from 1 to 127 samples embedded within them. TRK files are more responsive to your live triggering and have a variety of settings to give you a better feel when you are performing Remixes in Mixman. They also allow for auto-beat matching. You may load a TRK with a fast BPM (beats per minute/tempo) and combine it with a TRK with a slower BPM and they will automatically work.

We recommend that you are very careful about manually adjusting where data lives. Win7 has certain ways it wants Apps to do things now. Mixman Tracks, Mixes, Exports, Wav, My Samples, My Tracks, etc... All live in under Program Data/Mixman Technologies now.

If you want to move over older Mix and TRK files you will find the Tracks and Mixes folder in that location.

When you install new Songs, that is where they will install to.

*Mixman is a real-time music-playback App, and there are a many things that can interfere with rock-solid playback and performance. Most people today are online and have many Apps in the background communicating with the internet and websites. There are a variety of factors that could cause hiccups or glitches when operating the MIxman App. It’s always a good idea to just reboot your machine and re-launch the Mixman App if you are having some issues.

Mixman requires that you have some kind of input microphone either built-in or plugged in. As well, you must check your Windows settings to make sure that the microphone input is selected and not muted or Mixman won’t be able to get the input from your voice.

If your PC has an input jack, you can also take the output of a Keyboard, Synthesizer or any device that has audio to use for making a Sample or Overdub, it doesn’t have to be your voice on a microphone.

Mixman was not designed that way since a song in Mixman is not one file but made of many elements that you perform your own way.

* We are looking into continuous song load and load on-the-fly in future versions of Mixman.

Absolutely. We will be posting some feedback forms in the future. In the meantime, if there is a feature you’d like to see, or some things you’d like to see from Mixman, just use the contact form.

Mixman is designed for FUN! Mixman does not require musical training, advanced audio skills, and allows anyone to have fun making music. It turns your PC in to an instrument. Mixman does offer some real features that can be quite useful. Many people have used Mixman over the years to help with a project they cared about. It’s very easy and fast to do certain things in Mixman.

A reviewer for Remix Magazine, once described Mixman as a “swiss army knife”, that was handy for a Pro to have around the studio.

Our focus now at Mixman is making entertaining interactive music experiences that allow people to have fun interacting with Songs in various styles and from artists and bands they are interested in.

Not as this time. Let us know if you’d like us to offer gear!

Unfortunately, at the moment you can’t. Mixman originally developed the USB Controller for DM2 with Mattel. Some changes would need to be developed to update the controller and make it compatible with Win7. Do not attempt to run the controller or install it on any Windows operating system past WinXP!

We have been getting a lot of feedback from people asking for this, and we are looking in to it. If you have the USB Controller and would like to use it with our new App for Win7, you can send that feedback via our Contact page.

Many people, hackers, programmers have written their own software to convert the Mixman USB Controller in to an input device for their own purposes. These are all unauthorized uses of Mixman Technologies, Inc. intellectual property and we have not given our permission to anyone to do this. We have no connection at this time to anyone “hacking” into our controller.

Not at this time. It is possible that Mixman will do future versions with language support.

When you click the Question Mark symbol “ ? “ on the lower left hand side of the screen, it turns on Expanded Bubble Help. When you roll over any element in the Mixman App, there will be some information provided.

* You cannot turn it on or off while you are playing.

Yes, due to the request of users, we now display the corresponding key on the Track Indicator Lights. So if you see the letter “M” on the screen, that represents the sound that corresponds to press M on your PC keyboard.

Platter .PLT files are an advanced power move in Mixman. Many people new to Mixman get confused and accidentally press the K and the D keys which flip the platters. The way Mixman defaults now, is that the K and D buttons are disabled. To enable the other 16 tracks so that you can toggle with the K and D keys between all 32 tracks, you must go to the Options section from the Control Room. Click Options. Select the Audio Tab. And click the checkbox that enables Platter support. Now K and D will work.

* Note, Mixman App Free Version does not support 32 tracks. You must have a Full feature version for 32 tracks.

Right mouse click on the WARP preset slot and choose from the list. You must save the Mix file to have the WARP re-load the next time you open that song.

Double-Click on the FX Slot. From the Load Dialog navigate to your WARP FX folder. Select a preset and click Load or Open.

TMX is the Mixman file format that saves your work in the Track Maker Studio. It remembers any source sounds you loaded in, and settings you have on those sounds and all the patterns and sequences that you created.

Did you press Play button? You can’t hear sounds in Mixman without pressing Play and then triggering sounds. If that doesn’t solve things, you may need to check your speakers and settings with your computer.

Those are for quick loading of songs. You can store a Mix file in any of those slots and then when you start Mixman, you can just click, 1, 2, 7, etc...to load a song you’ve previously stored.

When you are in Play Mode in the Play Screen (Remixing Studio), press down Shift and a function key like F1 or F5. Certain laptops require you to press the FN key and the F1 so you would have to hold down 3 keys not 2.

Macros are like snapshots of whatever is going on. What tracks are locked. What settings you have made.

* Note, you can also start Mixman playing directly from a Macro. Just press the function Key that has a stored Macro in it and Mixman will begin.

You can store up to 12 Macros in F1-F12.

At the moment, you must use the mouse for scratching. Get your cursor on the strobe light area (kind of reddish orange) on either of the two turntable images in the Remixing Studio and “click-and-drag” don’t let go. Scratching scratches the last sample of the last track you touched.

So for instance, if you click a vocal and trigger it and let go and then do scratching, it will be scratching that sound even though its not playing or locked. There are more advanced settings for Scratching under Options.

* Also, if you have not loaded or touched a sound, there is a default scratch sound.

* Future version of Mixman will have auto-scratch.

The T key triggers AUTO-WARP on and off. This is really handy because you can control the WARP in precise ways. The indicators to the left that day Last, All, A/B, C/D determine what tracks will be have WARP on them. Last = last track touched. All = All tracks plaing A/B = left side of TT and C/D = right side of TT.

* There are settings under Options for Auto-WARP. These can be very dramatic. You can change the shape of the pattern of the WARP and you can set the length of time it takes for the entire shape to complete itself.

Check back to the website in the near future for How To Videos with advanced power moves. However, one important feature under Options is Pitch Shift in the Remixing Studio. There are two different ways to do pitch shift in real-time. You may want to experiment with that.

There is a Keyboard Layout PDF that installed with the App. Go to the Start Menu, Mixman Shortcuts and find the shortcut to the Keyboard Layout.

* There is also an appendix on the Mixman Reference Card on the How To Section of the website that lists most of the keyboard commands for Mixman.

Yes, you can use the mouse and sometimes need to use the mouse, but we recommend learning to play Mixman with the keyboard as it’s a lot more fun and you have more control. Using the mouse to turn a track on and off is the same as locking it. You will never be able to trigger a key manually with the mouse.

* Tip: certain tracks in Mixman usually found in the track indicator that corresponds to the comma key “ , ” have two-states. That means when you hold it down manually it plays one way and when you lock it, it plays another!

Mixman cannot provide support for anything to do with with Intel AppUp Store. We can provide technical support once you have registered with Mixman.com
